Snapshot Sept 1st 1939

A hawk soars upside-down beneath my meadows,
trees plunge into the depths of sky.
In this free moment before lunch
I shiver on a wind-whilled hill behind the farm
and a box-camera, its viewfinder inventing
the patchwork fields, the scudding clouds.

I aim - the shutter snaps behind the lens -
then wind the film on and stroll towards home,
finding that in the sun-filled kitchen
saucepans boil over, a kettle steams unnoticed.
In the polished darkness of the parlour
my sisters surround the wireless
stuttering the headline news
turning the world upside-down forever.
