Thwarted by Beyonce

Thwarted by Beyonce
I can't hear my bill.
The cashier squints at her nails,
I squint at the till.

She raises her voice again -
eight Euro and ten cents,
smiles a smile which clearly says
you're old and deaf and dense.

This time I actually hear her,
yet she still repeats the sum.
The chipped nail she's just found
has her quite overcome.

I ask rather matter-of-factly,
catching her by the throat,
have you heard snowdrops grow, dear?
'cause I have. I'm a poet.
