Above My Head Granite Angels Soar

Guidebook in hand, I imagine
five hundred years ago
and the half-completed church
a forest of scaffolding...

... the wooden gantry
glowed in the evening light
to the plainchant of chisels...

... masons and journeymen,
their calloused hands
numbed by November cold,
released seraphs
from the rough uneven stone...

... basalt columns foliate
in the dappled nave,
limestone blooms.
