For immigrants
death came mainly in the post.
A respectful knock on the door.
A letter slipped beneath the sea.

The telegrams would bring to mind
the tele-printer.
Uncle Dead Stop
Blues 6 Villa 2 Stop.

Mostly bodies we didn't know,
vague names,
sketched outlines in life,
corporeal now in death.

But for you
the death was an accusation,
carelessly flung,
the final ripples of your estrangement.
