Sample piece from An Exaltation of Starlings

Beyond the Mill Marsh,
the river takes a turn for the deep,
dark pike-swallowing deep,

pike looking up at us,
looking down on them.

Meniscus eyes
dead eyeing us,
thread razor teeth,
clench wide open.

Our people ate pike
long before we heard tell
of trout or salmon.

My father brought one home
on a stick-hook, just like
the tick our teachers made
in our copies in school. They say around here
the likes of it was never seen before.
They say around here
the likes of it will never be seen again.

Still I can see his scarlet gills,
slime gulping for air,
desperately trying
to talk things down.
