alter_egoWhen I was a child I invented things
hidden in cupboards, asleep in the folds
of curtains; I heard the secret breathings
of a woman's voice in my head, a mould
that grew swollen, erupting into spores
that infected my imagination.
She lived in the dark space beneath the stairs,
and often possessed the television,
by which means she could talk to me for hours.
Mum and Dad couldn't see through her disguise,
were never aware that the house had claws
or that it resonated with her voice.
Through time she came together in my skin,
became my bones, blood, everything within.
