The Butcher's Daughter

You and your father
are the only living things
behind the counter.
Tenderly you arrange
the remains
of his dedicated slaughter.

Your father is chopping sirloin
into precise slices.
Nothing is wasted.

From the corner of my eye
I see the blade of the cleaver.
For a brief moment I imagine
that he is disposing
of your last suitor.
You lay sausages on a tray,
folder them back on each other
by their strings, one by one,
like rows of unmentionable trophies.

Next you display some hearts
under a glass window.
The smalles of which,
on the left-hand corner,
is mine.
You brush it gently with a finger.
A shiver runs through my body.
Then you look up
into my eyes, and you know.
