The Waiting Room

Demented with distress for my own child,
I never did more than nod a weary sign
of recognition to the man with waist-length hair
and the sick baby called Levi
whom I met season after season
in the consultant's waiting room;
and he never did more than turn
his pinched, worried face to me
in the wordless communion of the stricken.
I would like that man to know
that I think of him and his son tonight
and hope, most passionately,
that they have prospered.
